Can I use the ab stability ball while pregnant?
I would love to do ab work yet I don’t know what exercises are safe while pregnant. I heard you can’t lay on your back for ab work while pregnant (aka sit-ups, crunches).
I’m in my 2nd trimester…what ab work can I do?

I would wait after you have the baby.
But I don’t know if it can exactly hurt the baby.
But again, I still would wait.

Exercises like reverse curls, crunches, leg lifts, and most other abdominal exercises are ok to continue during the first trimester. Even after your first trimester abdominal exercises may be continued although not in the same way as before. There is a very good reason why you should do abdominal in the non traditional way after your first trimester and that is because you dont want to lie on your back and compress your vena cava. This is the artery that returns the majority of your blood and provides oxygen to the baby so you dont want to put too much pressure on it.
I wouldn’t do an ab work out but there are other ways to work out
I have read a lot about pregnancy. There is no where I have read that ab workouts are bad. Actually, its the opposite. You will need those muscles to push the baby out!
I was able to do pilates and ab work on my back up until I was about 22 weeks pregnant.
Now that I am 37 weeks along, my routine is definitely a lot less! I use a stability ball with a 5 lb medicine ball to do about 20 crunches slowly. Of course I can’t get the range of motion I used to, but it helps maintain what I had. My doctor is very happy with my routine and says that more women should be active during their pregnancy.
I realize that most of the ab work needed to be done before I got pregnant and through my 1st trimester and also after the birth. Right now is just maintenance- not trying to achieve a rock hard 6 pack!
You can also try doing arm work while sitting on the ball- you’ll have to keep your core steady to keep your balance, and that will help keep your abs in good shape. I’m planning to put my ball in the TV room so that I can sit on it while watching TV- that way, I’m not just sitting around doing nothing.
Hi. I am in my 24th week right now, and my doc has advised not to do sit-ups or ab exercises that require laying on your back after your 18th week. Also, twists at the waist are said to be discouraged. Therefore, I am doing a pretty minimal ab workout, mostly consisting in different form of planks. Great, efficient workout without laying on the ground or much twisting. Good luck! : )
