Did you know that drinking wine, especially red wine, has been associated with a wide range of health benefits? Many of the benefits associated with drinking wine are the result of an antioxidant known as  resveratrol, which is found in the skins of red grapes. Antioxidants have anti-aging effects and are also good for the heart. Red wine can also reduce the incidence of kidney stones, ovarian cancer, and strokes. Drinking red wine has also been associated with a reduction of LDL (bad) cholesterol production, thereby reducing he risk of heart disease, through the presence of polyphenol compounds. Researchers believe that the low incidence of heart attacks in France may be related to the popularity of wine in that country.

While it is often said that health benefits are only found from drinking red wines, new research has exposed benefits that exist with white wines too. Many scientific studies have linked the drinking of wines, both red and white, to a wide range of beneficial health effects. A new study has even found that moderate wine consumption may even increase life expectancy by as much as five years. However, it is important to note that most of the health benefits that have been found with alcohol consumption are tied to wine, not beer or spirits.

Wine can be good for your health in moderation, and as part of a healthy and balanced diet. How many drinks, defined as a 5-ounce glass of wine, has been found to be beneficial? Men should not have more than two drinks per day, while women should limit themselves to one. Do not overindulge in the belief that all wine is good for your health. Any health benefits are erased if you drink too much.

Drinking occasionally throughout the week should not harm your health, and can in fact be beneficial for your heart, but you should still aim to stay ‘alcohol free’ for several days each week. Even those who acknowledge the potential health benefits of a drink also recognize that falling into a routine of drinking can be dangerous. It is also important to recognize that you should not drive after having even just one or two glasses of wine.

At what point does a regular drink or two become a problem? Many people assume that the only problem drinkers are those who stumble home drunk every night, but this isn’t always the case. Although occasional drinking can actually have positive health benefits, it is very important not to overdo it. If you drink most nights of the week, or frequently drink more than two or three drinks in an evening, you could be drinking too much. Not only could it be negatively affecting your long term health, but it could also cause you to wind up in trouble with the law, especially if you drink and drive. If you don’t want to end up in need of a DUI attorney to get you out of a mess, keep a careful eye on your drinking habits. Even if you are under the legal limit of .08, you can still be pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving, and you will need a DUI attorney to argue your side. If you do drink, do so responsibly, since overdoing it can negatively affect your health and your life.
